Yet some people continue to imagine feeding 10 billion people with help from AI, technology, etc. Not only the water problem, soil horizons continue to diminish - the northern plains should return to natural grassland minimum 25 years in every 100. An excellent and timely article on a very real crisis that is unfolding. I also cannot stress enough how important it is to monitor wells in a timely manner so that decentralized policies such as the LEMAs in Kansas could be implemented through community mobilization. Metering wells is a dire need in over-critical aquifers like the Ogallala. Kansas does this through the publicly available WIMAS dataset (which is also a rich panel dataset that's a blessing to economists working on the subject). But what about other states and regions where groundwater is in overdraft?

We need to be pushing our politicians and leaders to push for action before and not after the famines that we can precict are coming from 150 years of data!

At some point scarcity of water will outstrip oil as a concern for most people and countries, and it could be sooner rather than later.
